Marriage & Divorce Dates on a Couple
Add marriage and divorce dates, a place, and a note to a couple’s line, and control how they print, such as "m. 1990 · div. 2005".
Clicking the line between two partners opens the couple panel in the Inspector. It has two tabs, Dates & note and Line type, plus a footer pinned to the bottom with the line's colour, Hide, and Delete.
Add a marriage date
- Click the couple's line.
- On Dates & note, fill in Married: month, day, and year. A year alone is fine.
- Optionally add a Place (city, state, country).
The small menu next to the label sets how sure you are: Exact, About, Before, After, or Estimated. The date boxes follow the date format chosen in Settings.
Add a divorce date
Click + Add divorce and fill in Divorced. For couples already set to Divorce or Remarried, the divorce row appears automatically. If you enter a divorce date on a couple that is still shown as married, a Show this couple as divorced link switches the line to the divorce style in one click.
How it shows on the line
The Shows on the line as preview shows the exact text printed on the canvas, for example m. 1990 · div. 2005, with the place after the marriage date when you add one.
A note on the line
Use Note (shown on line) for anything else about the couple, such as a separation year, "met in college", or "first cousins". It's printed after the dates. There's no separate separation-date field, so put that here.
Older genograms that stored dates in the note: if a note reads like a date (for example "m. 1990"), the panel offers Use as dates to turn it into real date fields.
Changing the relationship type
Switch to the Line type tab to change Marriage to Dating, Divorce, Widowed, Affair, and so on. See Structural Relationships for every type.
Footer: colour, hide, delete
- Line Color: pick a swatch to colour this line, or the first one to go back to the default.
- Hide: keeps the relationship but removes the line from the canvas. Click again to show it.
- Delete: removes the relationship. Undo with Cmd/Ctrl + Z.
To move the couple's line up or down, drag its grip on the canvas. See Adjusting Lines.
