Why general diagram tools fall short for clinical work

Miro, Lucidchart, and Canva can produce ecomap-shaped diagrams, but they are blank canvases that require a clinician to build clinical meaning from scratch on every case. There are no preset system categories that match behavioral-health documentation conventions, no Hartman-standard line styles selectable from an inspector, and no concept of energy-flow direction. Workers end up improvising notation, which makes ecomaps from the same agency incomparable when clinicians hand off cases or supervisors review them.

Purpose-built ecomap software encodes clinical conventions as first-class features. System categories — family, work, healthcare, mental health, recovery, faith, community, recreation — are preloaded. Line styles follow Hartman 1978: strong, normal, tenuous, stressful, stressful-strong, conflictual, and broken. Arrow direction is a property of each connection, not a separate shape layered on top. The result is that two clinicians at different desks, using the same tool, produce ecomaps that read the same way in a case record or supervision session.

For agencies and practices, there is also the matter of data handling. A client's environmental support map is clinical data. Uploading it to a general SaaS diagramming tool without a BAA creates HIPAA exposure.
