Research View: Sources and Proof Levels for Every Fact
Attach sources to dates, places and relationships, see what is proven, and work through what still needs checking.
Research view turns a genogram into a research record. Every date, place and relationship can carry sources and a confidence level, conflicting sources are shown side by side, and anything not yet proven is faded on the canvas so the work left to do stands out. Research view is part of the Clinical plan.
Turning it on
- Click the Research button in the Guide group at the right end of the toolbar. Its badge shows your progress, for example "12 of 30 facts proven"
- To start every new genogram in Research view, go to Settings → Research and turn on Start new genograms in Research view. You can still switch it off per genogram from the toolbar
The four proof levels
- Proven (level 4): an official record of the event itself
- Very likely (level 3): direct but weaker evidence
- Probable (level 2): indirect evidence
- Plausible (level 1): deduced, no document
Choose what counts as proven in Settings → Research → What counts as proven (Level 2+, Level 3+ or Level 4). Facts below that level are faded.
Adding a source to a fact
- Select a person or relationship and find the date, place or link in the Inspector
- Click Add evidence and pick the source type (for example Birth, marriage or death record, Census, Church record, DNA match, Family member account, Client report or Family story). Each type suggests a confidence level you can change
- Add Where in the source, What this source says and Why I believe this, then click Save source
Sources are kept in the genogram's source library, so one record can support several facts. If two sources disagree, you'll see Sources disagree with both values, and you can choose Use this value or Keep this value. A fact can also be marked Disproven.
Working through the gaps
Click the Research button's panel to see Progress and the Still to prove list. Next unproven jumps to each remaining fact on the canvas in turn. Read a record with AI lets you upload a record and have the facts in it read out for you; note that the record is sent to the AI as-is, and names in it are not anonymized.
Free on every plan: impossible-fact checks
Check for impossible facts in Settings → Research flags things like a birth after a parent's death. It works on every plan, even without Research view.
