The Genogram Key (Legend)

Show, hide, move, and customize the key that explains your symbols.

The key (legend) is the panel that explains every symbol and line style used in your genogram. It updates automatically as you add new symbol types.

Showing or hiding the key

Click the Legend button in the toolbar at the bottom of the editor (the book icon) to toggle it on or off. If your key "disappeared", this toggle is almost always the reason — click it once to bring the key back.

Moving the key

The key is a draggable panel. Click and hold anywhere on it, then drag it to any corner of the canvas — its position is saved with your genogram, so it stays where you put it.

Customizing the key

  • Two-column layout — compact the key when it gets long
  • Counts — show how many people carry each marker
  • Custom section — add your own entries (for example, abbreviations you use in notes) with a custom section title

Getting the key into your export

When exporting or printing, turn on the Integrated Key toggle in the export dialog. The key is rendered onto the output itself — with an automatic two-column layout when it has many entries — so recipients can read the genogram without the app.
