Showing & Hiding Labels

Control which text appears under each person — gender, age, orientation, and more.

The text under each symbol (name, age, gender, and other attributes) is controlled by the Display Labels menu — you decide what's written out and what stays symbol-only.

The Display Labels menu with toggles for Name, Birthyear, Age, Gender, Orientation, Heritage, Religion, Occupation, Birth place, Cause of death, Medical and more

Hiding a label

  1. Open the Display Labels menu — the tag icon in the toolbar at the bottom of the editor (it shows a count of active labels)
  2. Toggle off the attribute you don't want written under people — gender captions, orientation, ages, and so on

The data isn't deleted. Hiding a label only removes the text from the canvas; the attribute stays saved on the person and can be shown again anytime.

Common uses

  • Hide the male/female caption — the square/circle symbol already communicates gender
  • Hide sensitive attributes (like sexual orientation) before presenting or exporting
  • Show ages only, for a clean clinical layout
  • Turn on Birth place to print a person's birthplace under their symbol as b. City
  • Turn on Cause of death to write out the cause below deceased people (off by default, so sensitive detail stays hidden until you want it)

Label position

Layout options let you center ages inside symbols and wrap long labels, which keeps dense genograms readable.
