Notes, Secrets & Text on the Canvas

Add sticky notes (N), secret markers (S) and free text (T) to your genogram, style them, connect them to people, and edit a secret’s label and notes.

Three kinds of objects can sit anywhere on the canvas. Add them from the Add group of the main toolbar or with a single key.

Notes (N)

  • Click Add Note or press N. A sticky note appears on the canvas.
  • Double-click it (or click it and choose Edit text) to type.
  • Click a note to open its toolbar: Font, Smaller / Larger, Bold, Italic, Underline, Note color, Connect to a person (draws a line from the note to someone) and Delete.

Text (T)

  • Click Add Text or press T for a free text label, such as a title or a caption.
  • Double-click to edit. Click it for the same styling options plus Text color.

Secrets (S)

A secret is a red triangle marker for something the family keeps hidden. Its details stay off the canvas unless you choose to show them.

  1. Click Add Secret or press S. A red triangle labeled "Secret" appears.
  2. Click the triangle to open its toolbar and a Notes card underneath. Write the details in the notes card. The toolbar has Show notes on canvas / Hide notes from canvas, Draw Connection (link it to the people involved) and Delete.
  3. Double-click the triangle or its label to rename it. Type the new label and press Enter (Esc cancels).

Secrets also get their own entry in the key.

Anyone who sees the chart sees canvas text

Notes and text are visible in exports and prints. For private details, use a secret with its notes hidden, or the person's own notes field in the Inspector. See Recording Extra Details on People.

Moving and deleting

Drag any note, text or secret to move it. Select it and press Delete, or use Delete in its toolbar. When you run Auto-Arrange, Move notes and labels with the people keeps them beside the person they were next to.
