On This Device and Password-Protected Backups

Back up and restore your Clinical-mode files. Backups are encrypted with a password you choose, and a lost password cannot be recovered.

On this device (Dashboard sidebar) lists the genograms you made in Clinical mode. They're encrypted in this browser and never sent to GenogramAI, so only this device can open them, and we can't recover them for you. Backups are how you keep them safe and move them to another computer.

Making a backup

  1. On the Dashboard, open On this device
  2. Click Backup
  3. In Protect this backup, choose a password (at least 8 characters) and type it again
  4. Click Encrypt & download. One file containing all your local genograms is saved to your computer

When you leave the editor in Clinical mode, you're also offered Download Backup & Leave, which asks for a password the same way.

We can't recover a lost backup password

The backup is encrypted with AES-256 using your password, which never leaves your browser and isn't stored anywhere. Without it, the backup can't be opened, and support can't reset it. Keep the password somewhere safe, such as a password manager.

Restoring a backup

  1. Open On this device on the computer and browser where you want the files
  2. Click Restore (or Restore from backup if the list is empty) and choose the backup file
  3. Enter the password in Enter backup password and click Restore

Restored files are re-encrypted for this device. If a genogram in the backup already exists here, the backup version replaces it. Backups made before password protection was added still restore without a password.

When to back up

  • After every session with client data
  • Before clearing your browser's data, switching browsers, or getting a new computer
  • Before cancelling or downgrading your Clinical plan

Clearing this browser's data erases your local files and the key that unlocks them, so a recent backup is your only copy.
