GenoPro alternative
Genograms on your Mac, in your browser, and on Windows
GenogramAI is a modern GenoPro alternative. Describe a family and the AI draws it, bring your GenoPro data across with GEDCOM, and export clean PDFs, images and posters. Nothing to install.
Why people look for a GenoPro alternative
We read 1,569 threads on GenoPro’s public support forum to see what its users actually ask for. These are the reasons that keep coming up, each with the threads behind it.
You are on a Mac
GenoPro 2020 is Windows-only, and GenoPro’s own buy page points Mac users to CrossOver or a Windows install. Mac versions have been requested on the forum since 2005, and the multi-platform GenoProX is still unreleased.
You want software that is still moving
The current release is GenoPro 2020. Forum regulars ask whether it is still being developed, and recent threads report Windows 11 issues and GEDCOM files that newer sites no longer accept.
You need it for a class
Students on Macs struggle to open or convert a .gno file for an assignment, or to hand it in through Canvas. A browser-based genogram opens anywhere and exports a PDF or PNG in one click.
Your families don’t fit the old templates
Users have asked for same-sex couples without “husband/wife” prompts and for gender markers that match current conventions. GenogramAI has transgender, non-binary and intersex symbols, sexual orientation markers, and adopted, foster, surrogate and donor child lines.
You are tired of fixing the layout by hand
“Better AutoArrange” is one of the longest feature threads on the forum. GenogramAI lays out generations for you, hops crossing lines automatically, and the AI can rearrange a chart when you ask.
You want clean image and poster output
Asks for direct PNG export and wall charts go back years. GenogramAI exports PNG, SVG and PDF, and prints posters up to 36 × 48 in or A0 — or tiles them across Letter/A4 sheets with trim marks.
GenogramAI and GenoPro, side by side
GenoPro is a capable, long-running genealogy program. Here is an honest comparison, including the things GenoPro does that GenogramAI doesn’t. GenoPro details are from genopro.com as of October 2026.

Move from GenoPro in three steps
GenogramAI opens GenoPro .gno files directly, on any computer — including Macs, where GenoPro itself doesn’t run.
Open your .gno file
Choose Import on the GenogramAI dashboard and pick the .gno file — no conversion needed (files saved by GenoPro 2 or later).
Check what came across
People, families, union types, adopted and foster children and emotional relationships are imported and laid out to genogram conventions.
Keep working anywhere
Edit on a Mac, a Chromebook or a tablet, add medical history and households, or ask the AI. A GenoPro GEDCOM export works too, emotional links included.
Every format we read: import a family tree file.
What you get that GenoPro doesn’t have
Describe it, and the AI draws it
Type “Maria and José married in 1985, two kids, José’s father died of a heart attack” and get a laid-out genogram you can keep editing by chat.
Photo of a hand-drawn genogram → chart
Snap a whiteboard or notebook genogram and convert it, symbols and relationships included.
Research view
Sources and proof levels on every fact, conflicting sources flagged, impossible dates caught, and AI that reads obituaries and records.
Clinical mode
Client genograms stored encrypted on your device with zero-knowledge encryption, plus a Mac and Windows desktop app.
GenogramAI is the better fit if…
- You use a Mac, a Chromebook or switch between computers
- You make genograms for therapy, social work, nursing or a class
- You want a chart from a description instead of building it box by box
- You need a clean PDF, PNG or poster to hand in or present
- You want sources and proof levels on a family chart
GenoPro may still suit you if…
- You manage tens of thousands of individuals across many GenoMaps
- You rely on its custom report templates and hosted family website
- You attach large photo archives to people
- You need Hebrew, Julian or other non-Gregorian calendars
- You are on Windows and happy with a one-time license
Questions
Is there a version of GenoPro for Mac?+
Not today. GenoPro 2020 runs on Windows, and GenoPro’s website suggests Mac users install CrossOver or Windows. A multi-platform GenoProX has been announced but is not released. GenogramAI runs natively in Safari, Chrome or Firefox on a Mac, and also has a Mac desktop app on the Clinical plan.
Can I bring my GenoPro files into GenogramAI?+
Yes. Import your .gno file directly (saved by GenoPro 2 or later): people, families, union types, adopted and foster children and emotional relationships come across. A GEDCOM export from GenoPro also works, emotional links included. Photos and GenoPro display settings are not imported.
Is GenogramAI free?+
There is a free plan with 2 genograms. Pro is $12/month (less billed annually) and Clinical, which adds Research view, the desktop app and zero-knowledge local storage, is $29/month. GenoPro is a one-time $49 per PC after a free 14-day trial.
Which is better for large genealogy databases?+
For tens of thousands of individuals, photo archives, non-Gregorian calendars and custom report templates, GenoPro is built for that scale. GenogramAI is designed for genograms — usually tens to a few hundred people — where relationships, health patterns and clear output matter most.
Does GenogramAI handle sources like a genealogy program?+
Yes. Research view lets you cite a source for each date, place and relationship with a confidence level, flags facts where sources disagree, fades anything not yet proven, and catches impossible dates. Sources import from and export to GEDCOM.
Is GenogramAI suitable for clinical genograms?+
Yes. It uses McGoldrick-style symbols with emotional and social relationships, medical conditions, and households. Clinical mode stores client genograms encrypted on your device so they never reach our servers.
Can I print a large wall chart?+
Yes. Export a PDF at poster sizes up to 36 × 48 in or A0 for a print shop, or tile it across Letter or A4 sheets with trim marks and an assembly guide to print at home.
